Our son just turned 16 and he needs to go to an internship 30 miles away twice a week for the month of June. He needs to get his driver's license. So we've been having him drive more to practice before taking the driving test. This experience is improving my driving skills too. It's hard for me to criticize his failure to use turn signals if I don't use mine. I probably should not forbid him from using his phone while driving if I use mine.

Yesterday I drove to Natchitoches and back. We weren't too pressed for time, so I decided to find out how much gasoline I'd use driving at two different speeds. I filled the gas tank before leaving Alexandria, before leaving Natchitoches and upon arriving back in Alexandria. On the drive from Alexandria to Natchitoches I drove 76 miles per hour; on the way back to Alexandria I drove 66 miles per hour. The 2002 Honda Accord got 21.6 miles/gallon during the fast track. It got 35.5 miles/gallon on the slow track.
Even if my calculations are off by 10% due to the wind or difference in gasoline pumps, this amazes me.
The moral of the story, slow down and learn.
